    Notes:

    Friedrich joined the Navy on 1 Apr 1914 and distinguished himself as lieutenant in the World War, so that he received the Cross of Honour in the second and first class.
    He also took part in the scuttling of the German fleet in Scapa flow.
    After the World War he was officer of the watch on torpedo boats and then commander of a minesweeper.
    From 1928, by which time he had been promoted to lieutenant commander, he was active in the inspection of the torpedos and mines function.
    After a command as chief of half a flotilla of minesweepers and serving as Admiralty staff officer in the command of the naval station of the Baltic sea, he became naval captain in command of mnesweepers. In this position he held the designation of Commodore.
    During the campaign against Poland he played an outstanding role in the deployment and thorough training of the minesweeping organisation and in the continuous and successful mines operation of the German Navy.
    In the action in Norway he took part in searching and clearing voyages and led undertakings far out in northern waters.
    A flotilla of minesweepers led by him personally was the first group to cross the straits of Dover by daylight.
    These minesweeping activities were then extended up to the spanish border. On Oct 1940 he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross.

    He visited the gymnasium at Elberfeld from Porten and passed the examination for his Abitur in 1887.
    Then he studied medicine, first in Tubingen where he did his first semester, then in Wurzburg and Kiel.
    After passing the State Examination and his promotion to his doctors degree in medicine he fiirst participated in special courses in Berlin and served a second semester in Hannover and subsequently his internship. In 1893 he started his practice in Ebergotzen by Gottingen, moved to Struth near Adenroth in 1896 and in 1898 to Brosdorf by Leipzig, where he was active for 33 years.
    He retired in 1931 and took up residence inSt. Gallen, since 1940 inBlankenburg on the Harz.

    He studied agriculture in Hohenheim and Luxemburg and became leaseholder of the royal estate Adenroth in Wied, Nassau. In 1867 he obtained the estate in Porten by Bohwinkel, which he estranged again in 1903 in order to move to Barmen.
    The Reformed congregation Barmen-Gemarke elected him as elder in 1906 and he served the congregation meritoriously till his death (Werth-Lauffs p.482)
