    Notes:

If her birth and marriage dates are correct then she was 12 years old when married which is extremely unlikely, presuming that her marriage date is
correct then she was born in France. Her daughter, Appolonia was born in 1706 so 1700 for marriage is probably correct.

    Notes:

In addition to their main farm where they lived, two other loan farms,d'Matkamme and d'Oorlogsfontijn, all in the same area, accoding to
the inventory drawn up after his death.
In the church register, the minister recorded that during the wedding ceremony the bride held in her arms a child who had been baptised that same day and named Katharina, in order to legitimise her, and that, between the couple stood another child whose name was not known to him.
For a discussion of his parentage and place in the family tree, see my notes on his mother, Trijntje Harmens, and for ageneral discussion of the early Van Wijks see my introduction.
There is a baptism in the early (and possibly defective) registers of Drakenstein which might apply to him:
31 Julij 1703 Guillaume, d'Vader Willem van (sic), d'Moeder Trijn arme
but this date seems to be too late for him to be the son of Willem van Wijk, unless the baptism came rather longer after the birth than seems to have been usual at that time, or that in copying the baptism was mistakenly put under 1703 rather than 1702 where it would make sense.

Willem married Johanna Catharina CAMPHER, b1c1 on 2 Jan 1729 in Drakenstein, Cape, South Africa(Paarl). Johanna (daughter of Cornelis CAMPHER, b1 and Dorothea OELOFSE, b3) was christened on 19 Jun 1707 in Stellenbosch, Cape, South Africa; died about 1746 in Cape, South Africa. Jan Smit was a soldier stationed in Delft in 1681

Arrived at the Cape about 1688 from Maastricht, Nethetlands with wife and two children, burger at Stellenbosch. Probably died between 1 and 5/6.10.1696 after a verbal duel and fight with one Jacob Cloete about the manner in which he handled his horse.

    Lysvriende,

is!)

    Groete,
    Diwwie.

Jan Smit van Maastrich (D & P p886) x Delft 20.12.1681 Adriaantje Tol (xx Andreas Kuyper van Stettin) d/v Jacob Tol en Elisabeth van der Piet.
Jan Smit soldier in the company of Captain Moor (1681) of the garrison at Delft and, from 1687, Jonkers Hoek in Stellenbosch born Maastricht died October 1696

Notes: At his marriage he was described as a soldier in the company of Captain Moor, at present garrisoned in the town (of Delft). A child of Johannes Smith was buried at the Oude Kerk, Delft on the 2nd March 1683, described as ' een baarkind' (ie. between one and 12 years old). Could this have been Christoffel, the son of Lucretia van Senne? Or might it have referred to his son, Johannes, baptised just two months previously? In a declarion signed before the Secretary of Stellenbosch on the 11th October 1705 and witnessed by Augustus Meijhuijsen and Jacobus Smit, Johannes Mulder and Dirk Coetsee, both Old Heemraden, stated that it was known to them that a certain farm in Jan de Jonkers Hoek, to the east above the farm of the late Jan de Jonker, had been in the possesion of Jan Smit from 1687 until his death and was still in the possesion of Andries Cuijper as the husband of Jan Smit's widow. A Jan Smit is listed in the Cape muster rolls from 1690 on, (there are no muster rolls between 1686 and 1690) but Jan Smit and Adriana Tol as a couple are first mentioned in the1692 rolls, resident at Stellenbosch with four children. In the 1692 Opgaafrol (tax return) they are listed as having three sons and one daughter, one pistol, one rifle (?- seijd geweer), one flintlock, two horses and six oxen. In 1693 and 1695 they are listed again, on both occasions with five children, Johannes Smit being described as 'from Maastricht' in the 1693 roll. In 1696 we have just 'the widow of Jan Smith' (this muster roll made no note of children) and in 1698 'the widow of Jan Smith with 6 children'. On 1st October 1696 Jan Smit was insulted by Jacob Cloete. Enraged, Smit drew his rapier, but Cloete evaded the blows and clouted Smit with a piece of wood, beat him with his fists and kicked his chest, shouting: 'Lie there, you dog!'. Within a very few days, during which he suffered continual pain in his chest, Jan Smit died. (source: Cape Archives, 1/STB 18/153, Notarial Declarations <../notes/note_JanSmitDeath.htm>)

Arriaantze Jans, over dronkenschap sou werden berispt.

"Is geresolveerd den 17 April den H.H.

Jan Janse Swart was skynbaar afgedank as scriba (moontlik agv sy drankprobleem)
Andries de Noordman was ook bekend as Andries Olofssen/Oelofsen.

    Groete
    Christo

Sy was Adriaantje Tol.

    Adriana Tol
of Oudenlangendijck, Delft later, of Stellenbosch, Cape of Good Hope born 1656, Delft baptized 16 July 1656, Nieuwe Kerk, Delft died after 1722

    Notes:
In the marriage entry in the Stellenbosch register for her later marriage to Andries Cuyper, she is described as being from or of Delft 'van Delft'. I have assumed that the Aryaentje Tol who was baptised on 16 July 1656 in the Nieuwe Kerk, Delft, is the same person as the Adriana Tol who, by 1688, was living in the Cape. I have not yet discovered any proof positive of this but for my reasoning see my notes <../notes/note_tol.htm>. On 22nd December 1685, named as Adriana Jacobsz. Tol, the wife of Johannes Smit, soldier, she appeared before the Delft Weeskamer and stated that she was now supported by her husband. She declared that her mother had raised and provided for her properly; she thanked her for her good care and freed her of any further obligation. From 1692 through to 1695 she is listed in the muster rolls as living in Stellenbosch with Jan Smit, but from 1696 she is listed as his widow. On the 29th June 1700, the Stellenbosch Church Meeting suspended her from church services for a year. The reason is not stated other than that she is admonished to live a better life. Unfortunately none of the earlier Stellenbosch Church Meeting minutes, which might have contained a previous warning, appear to have survived. A year later, on the 28th March 1701, her suspension was continued.

married (1) 4 January 1682 at Schipluiden (this date is not certain)

( see notes <../notes/smit_sennen_note.htm> for circumstances surrounding their marriage)

    Johann Ahlers Databasis

    Notes:

Arrived about 1676/78 from Engen, Netherlands.
Johan van Deventer's text read, '. . . there are serious errors in the Van Wijck/Wijk/Wyk family tree. Roelof (not even mentioned in dV/P) is a1 and the father of Adrian (Arie) referred to as a2 in dV/P. It is more likely that Roelof and Willem were brothers with the same father but different mothers. Roelof (*abt 1643 in Holland), his wife Trijntje Jans (*abt 1637) and their son Arie van Wijck (~18/1/1655 in Amsterdam) came to SA about 1677. At the same time Willem van Wijck (*bef 1655) also arrived in SA.'

http://www.ballfamilyrecords.co.uk/kfp/I225.htmlHe first appears at the Cape as a Company servant, working in the Company's Garden in 1672. By 1678 he was a free burger, working in partnership with Gerrit Teunisz and later with Hans Erntrout. (see my timeline for Willem van Wijk).
Two children by his first wife are recorded in the baptismal registers of the Cape Town congregation; Arie and Jannetie. The inventory taken after the death of his first wife, dated the 10th March 1695, notes that she left two minor children. Theseare named in the Weeskamer record dated 2 September 1712 as Arij and Gerrit van Wijk, so presumably Jannetie had died before 1695.
The children born of his second marriage are also listed in the 1712 Weeskamer note mentioned above, as Maria, Anna and Willem van Wijk.
For his wives and children see my notes on Trijntje Harmensz, his second wife, and for a general discussion of the early Van Wijks see my notes.

Willem married Trijntje HARMENSZ about 1694. Trijntje and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  6. 13.  Trijntje HARMENSZ and died.

    Notes:

Trijntje Harmens is first recorded living with Willem van Wijk as his wife in the Opgaaf Roll of 1695, and she continues in the Muster and Opgaaf records as his wife until she is recorded as his widow in 1702.
On 31st March 1702 Trijntje Harmensz: is named in the Weeskamer minutes as the widow of Willem van Wijk who had first been married to Trijntje Hillebrands. I assume that the marriage took place at Drakenstein - there is no record of it or its date.
In the Opgaaf rolls of 1695 Willem and Trijntje Harmens are recorded with two sons and one daughter. The two sons must be Arij and Gerrit, sons of the first wife so the daughter must belong to Trijntje Hermansz: and is possibly Anna van Wijk, suggesting that Willem and Trijntje Harmensz must have been together since 1694 and, pending further evidence, I shall assume the marriage took place then.
By 1700 (Opgaaf roll) they have two sons and two daughters, suggesting that Anna had been born by then, and in 1702 they are listed with 3 sons and 2 daughters, giving a possible birth date for Willem.
The couple are recorded in all these records as living in Drakenstein. There are no records of the baptism of any of children of this couple in any of the Cape baptismal registers of the period, except possibly one in the Drakenstein Church Records. The Drakenstein baptisms which would have covered this period are known to be in large part lost or defective.

    Notes:

They first appear as a couple in the opgaaf returns of 1695, apparently already with a child. The marriage is assumed to have taken place at Drakenstein.
