  1. 1.  Hendrik CLOETE, b4c2d2 was born in 1725; was christened on 9 Dec 1725; died in 1799 in Cape, South Africa.

    Notes:

He lived at Nooitgedach Stellenbosch until 1778 when he bought Groot Constantia.

From a genealogical chart on the Cloete Family lent to JSG by Jumbo Vanrenen.

Cloete's name is almost as closely associted with Constantia as that of Simon van der Stel. He built a new double-storeyed wine cellar which was possibly designed by L.M. Thibault, and in 1791 employed the sculptor Anton Anreith to beautify its pediment with an elaborate stucco relief. It shows the young Ganymede, cup-bearer to the gods, surrounded by frolicking cherubs, all in an irrepressible baroque style. Cloete also altered the homestead extensively in about 1793. He transformed it into a single-storey building, U-shaped and thatched, and added the splendid and unusual gable which is almost double the usual height and has within it a niche in which stands the female figure of Abundance symbolically holding a horn of plenty. This too, is thought to be the work of Anreith.

    From a guide of Constantia

Hendrik married Hester Anna LOURENS, a1b2c2 on 3 Jun 1758 in Cape, South Africa. Hester (daughter of Pieter LOURENS, a1b2 and Catherina VAN DER BYL, b1c9) was christened on 8 Apr 1731; died in in Cape, South Africa. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
