    Volgens Pama I was hy van Nieuwkerk afkomstig.He came to South Africa from the village of NIEUWKERK, but whether the Dutch or Belgian Nieuwkerk is not clear. On 4 April 1715 he became the owner of the farm "Het Slot" (The Castle) of Paardeberg, district Drakenstein.
    All the Steenkamps of South Africa are descended from one of his five sons Johannes Harmen, Casper, Lucas, Wilhelm or Gerrit. The other three sons died childless. Of the only daughter Anna we know nothing except, (intriguingly!) that she was murdered on the frontier by Bushmen.
