    Fled from France from Rouen,Normandy before 1690 aboard the barque Borssenburg. Wife is Jeanne de la Batte. They have two daughters at that stage Jean and Jeanne. Tailor and farmer. Settled at Blouklip near Stellenbosch. He started signing his name as Willem Nel by 1703. By 1708 they have 12 children

Hy was 'n kleremaker van Rouaan in Normandië en sy was van Saumur langs die Loire-rivier in Anjou afkomstig. Drie kinders, van wie die oudste klein oorlede is, is in Nederland gebore voor die gesin, wwarskynlik aan boord van die Borssenburg, na die Kaap vertrek het. Die gesin Neel het hul nie soos die meeste ander vlugtelinge in die Drakenstein gevestig nie, maar wel op die plaas Blouklip naby Stellenbosch. Hulle het ook gouer as die ander vlugtelinge vernederlands.

    French fugitive arrived at the Cape before 1690 with his wife Jeanne de la Batte from Saumur and their two children Jean and Jeanne. They later lived in "onder Stellenbosch" [lower Stellenbosch]

    Luidens SAG (en Pama) is daar twee NEL stamvaders:

    1 Guillaume (Franse naam vir Willem) NEEL of NEL * ca 1663, Franse
    vlugteling van Rouaan, Normandïe, arriveer voor 1690 waarskynlik aan boord van die 'Borssenburg' met sy vrou en hul twee kinders, Jean en Jeanne, kleremaker en boer, vestig te Blouklip naby Stellenbosch, teen 1734 woon hy en sy vrou in die Kaapse distrik. Reeds in 1705 is hy as Willem NEL bekend en het hy sy naam so geteken + ca 1734 x Amsterdam, Nederland 3 Mei 1685 Jeanne (DE) LA BATTE * Samour langs die Loire-rivier ca 1663.

    2 Etienne NEL van Dauphiné * ca 1668, in 1693 soldaat in diens van VOC + ca 1738, woon op La Dauphiné, Franschhoek x Marie-Madeleine MARAIS * Hurepoix, suid van Parys ca 1682 + 7 Jul 1716.

    Pama C., Die Groot Afrikaanse Familienaamboek, p. 233. Betekenis: Sons afgelei van Tonnel, 'n vorm van tonneau, d.i. ton. Niel word ook afgelei van Cornelius.
    Families 3 no 173 - stamboom opgestel deur Maria Eirene Oosthuizen, na die stamboom in 'n familiebybel van Louis Jacobus Nel, gedoop 15 Februarie 1778.
    Guillaume was 'n Franse vlugteling en kom op 12 Mei 1688 aan boord van die Borssenburg' aan die Kaap aan. Sy plaas, Blauwklip Stellenbosch (1690-1734) was gelee waar die spoorwegstasie van Wellington tans is. Hy was 'n kleremaker en die gesin was van die eerste Franse gesinne om te vernederlands.

    Guillame Neel is in 1734 oorlede. Sy oudste oorlewende seun, Jean (1687-1740)
    trou in 1716 met die sewentienjarige Suzanne Fourie. Hulle boer in die distrik Stellenbosch en word die ouers van sewe kinders. In 1742 trou Suzanne met Christian Ernst Schutte by wie sy nog een seun het. Die nageslag van die seuns Esaie (1691) en Willem (1696) het blykbaar in die manlike lyn uitgesterf, terwyl Elias (1701) die vader word van twee seuns uit sy tweede huwelik in 1733 met Anne Vivier. Adriaan Nel (1703-1769) se huwelik in 1725 met Catharina Appel was met elf kinders geseen, terwyl sy broer Pieter * 1704, ook in 1725 trou met
    Aletta van Deventer en die vader van tien kinders word.
    Families 8 no. 117 - Samesteller Joseph Petrus Jooste geb. 4 Junie 1900 in samewerking met Claudie Jooste.

    Volgens Pama II was sy van ook Niel gespel en was hy van Rouaan (Rouen?) afkomstig. Hy kom as Franse vlugteling voor 1690 met sy vrou en twee kinders Jean en Jeanne in die Kaap aan. Hulle woon later in Stellenbosch.

    A French Huguenot who was a tailor and a farmer arrived in the
    Cape on 5 Jun 1688, on De Schelde that had left Amsterdam on 19
    Feb 1688. In 1690 the farm 'Blaauklip' in Wamakersvallei was
    allotted to him, and in 1711 the farm 'Bootmansdrift' in
    Drakenstein. This farm is the site of the present day Wellington
    railway station.

    According to shipping records De Schelde belonged to the Chamber
    of Zeeland. Left Vlissingen on 19 Feb 1688 and arrived in Table
    Bay on 29 May 1688. 140 feet long. No deaths or sickness on
    board; put into St Jago for repairs 22-30 Jun 1688

    Willem, 'n kleremaker van beroep, was van Rouaan en het op Blaauklippen geboer wat hy van Gerrit Jansz Visser c1690 gekoop het. Hy was getroud met Jeanne de la Batte van Saumur.

    The Cape refugee Guillaume Néel, farmer and tailor, born about the year 1663, is known to have come from Rouen, although his name has not bee found among the Néels who worshipped at Grand-Queville. He took refuge in Amsterdam before the revocation of the edict of Nantes and married Jeanne la Batte in that city on May 3, 1685. In addition to their children Jean and Jeanne born Amsterdam, they had a son David, baptised there on March 7, 1686, who must have died in infancey.
    Jeanne la Batte was born in 1663 at Saumur in Anjou.
