Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Willem VAN WYK was christened on 23 Aug 1739 (son of Willem VAN WIJK, a2b6 and Johanna Catharina CAMPHER, b1c1); died in in Cape, South Africa.

Willem married Kornelia KOEKEMOER on 27 Nov 1757 in Swartland, Cape, South Africa. Kornelia (daughter of Joachim KOEKEMOER and Maria PUTTER, b8) was born on 16 Sep 1725; was christened on 25 Sep 1725 in Stellenbosch, Cape, South Africa; died in in Cape, South Africa. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Willem VAN WIJK, a2b6 was born in in Cape, South Africa; was christened on 19 Jan 1698 (son of Willem VAN WIJK, a2 and Trijntje HARMENSZ); died about Jan 1756 in Cape, South Africa.

    Notes:

In addition to their main farm where they lived, two other loan farms,d'Matkamme and d'Oorlogsfontijn, all in the same area, accoding to
the inventory drawn up after his death.
In the church register, the minister recorded that during the wedding ceremony the bride held in her arms a child who had been baptised that same day and named Katharina, in order to legitimise her, and that, between the couple stood another child whose name was not known to him.
For a discussion of his parentage and place in the family tree, see my notes on his mother, Trijntje Harmens, and for ageneral discussion of the early Van Wijks see my introduction.
There is a baptism in the early (and possibly defective) registers of Drakenstein which might apply to him:
31 Julij 1703 Guillaume, d'Vader Willem van (sic), d'Moeder Trijn arme
but this date seems to be too late for him to be the son of Willem van Wijk, unless the baptism came rather longer after the birth than seems to have been usual at that time, or that in copying the baptism was mistakenly put under 1703 rather than 1702 where it would make sense.

Willem married Johanna Catharina CAMPHER, b1c1 on 2 Jan 1729 in Drakenstein, Cape, South Africa(Paarl). Johanna (daughter of Cornelis CAMPHER, b1 and Dorothea OELOFSE, b3) was christened on 19 Jun 1707 in Stellenbosch, Cape, South Africa; died about 1746 in Cape, South Africa. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Johanna Catharina CAMPHER, b1c1 was christened on 19 Jun 1707 in Stellenbosch, Cape, South Africa (daughter of Cornelis CAMPHER, b1 and Dorothea OELOFSE, b3); died about 1746 in Cape, South Africa.

    7. Cornelis Abraham Johannes VAN WYK, a2b6c8 was born in 1742; was christened on 21 Apr 1742; died in in Cape, South Africa.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Willem VAN WIJK, a2 was born before 1655 in Ingen, Nederbetuwe, Wijck Bij Duurstede, Nederland (son of Adriaen Gerritsz VAN WIJK and Jantgen AERTS); died in 1702 in Cape, South Africa.

    Notes:

Arrived about 1676/78 from Engen, Netherlands.
Johan van Deventer's text read, '. . . there are serious errors in the Van Wijck/Wijk/Wyk family tree. Roelof (not even mentioned in dV/P) is a1 and the father of Adrian (Arie) referred to as a2 in dV/P. It is more likely that Roelof and Willem were brothers with the same father but different mothers. Roelof (*abt 1643 in Holland), his wife Trijntje Jans (*abt 1637) and their son Arie van Wijck (~18/1/1655 in Amsterdam) came to SA about 1677. At the same time Willem van Wijck (*bef 1655) also arrived in SA.'

http://www.ballfamilyrecords.co.uk/kfp/I225.htmlHe first appears at the Cape as a Company servant, working in the Company's Garden in 1672. By 1678 he was a free burger, working in partnership with Gerrit Teunisz and later with Hans Erntrout. (see my timeline for Willem van Wijk).
Two children by his first wife are recorded in the baptismal registers of the Cape Town congregation; Arie and Jannetie. The inventory taken after the death of his first wife, dated the 10th March 1695, notes that she left two minor children. Theseare named in the Weeskamer record dated 2 September 1712 as Arij and Gerrit van Wijk, so presumably Jannetie had died before 1695.
The children born of his second marriage are also listed in the 1712 Weeskamer note mentioned above, as Maria, Anna and Willem van Wijk.
For his wives and children see my notes on Trijntje Harmensz, his second wife, and for a general discussion of the early Van Wijks see my notes.

    Birth:
Alt Birth: Bef 1655 Amsterdam, Holland

    Died:
Died between 23rd January and 31st March

Willem married Trijntje HARMENSZ about 1694. Trijntje and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Trijntje HARMENSZ and died.

    Notes:

Trijntje Harmens is first recorded living with Willem van Wijk as his wife in the Opgaaf Roll of 1695, and she continues in the Muster and Opgaaf records as his wife until she is recorded as his widow in 1702.
On 31st March 1702 Trijntje Harmensz: is named in the Weeskamer minutes as the widow of Willem van Wijk who had first been married to Trijntje Hillebrands. I assume that the marriage took place at Drakenstein - there is no record of it or its date.
In the Opgaaf rolls of 1695 Willem and Trijntje Harmens are recorded with two sons and one daughter. The two sons must be Arij and Gerrit, sons of the first wife so the daughter must belong to Trijntje Hermansz: and is possibly Anna van Wijk, suggesting that Willem and Trijntje Harmensz must have been together since 1694 and, pending further evidence, I shall assume the marriage took place then.
By 1700 (Opgaaf roll) they have two sons and two daughters, suggesting that Anna had been born by then, and in 1702 they are listed with 3 sons and 2 daughters, giving a possible birth date for Willem.
The couple are recorded in all these records as living in Drakenstein. There are no records of the baptism of any of children of this couple in any of the Cape baptismal registers of the period, except possibly one in the Drakenstein Church Records. The Drakenstein baptisms which would have covered this period are known to be in large part lost or defective.

    Notes:

They first appear as a couple in the opgaaf returns of 1695, apparently already with a child. The marriage is assumed to have taken place at Drakenstein.

In February 2000 I e-mailed Mansell Upham as follows, 'After several e-mail communications with Janet Melville (because of her interest in the Louws, Van der Merwes and Van WYks), I have received from her an 'uitset' in HTML of her amended version of my ancestors with those particular surnames. The individual, though, at particular issue here is, and I quote from Janet's HTML attachment, '7.48  ?,Ansela :van die Kaap «KP [5838]' There's nothing else. Her husband was, it seems, the following person (taken from the same HTML text), '7.47 Campher(Campfer/Kamfer),Lourens(Lorenz) :- van Morrouw, burger Stellenbosch, eienaar van die plaas Murasie by Koelenhof, besit plaas Driesprong 1693 «DU [5837] X 1685'  -  a German immigrant? Do you perhaps any more information on the woman Ansela?' His reply contained the following, 'What Janet has given you is more or less what most people know about this couple.  I can provide more information - but there is a hitch - as she is one of the women that I have been researching in depth recently.  I am reluctant to divulge too much at this stage for the simple reason that we have  two women by the same name whom I cannot discount with absolute certainty as being possibly one and the same person.  Campher was indeed a German - from Pommerania - and you can find more about him in Hoge's 'Personalia of the Germans at the Cape'.There is another hitch - I am not entirely satisfied that the children attributed to her were necessarily hers.  If Angenitie was indeed her daughter, then we have an exciting aspect to contend with - namely that her descendants would have been the many Van Wyks to be found amongst the Griqua, Nama and Rehoboth Basters. I do not want to say too much as this stage until I know more.  I will let you know, however, once I am more secure about what I have managed to piece together.Have you ever visited 'Muratie'?  They now produce a wine named after Ansela...'

    -------------------
    Lourens Campher
    born Werenhold

    Notes:
Lourens Campher first appears in 1688 in the Cape District, but by 1691 he was resident in Stellenbosch (Opgaaf and Muster Rolls). A wife is not mentioned until 1695 when he is listed along with Ansela van de Caab and three children. From their opgaaf returns they seem not to have been great farmers, starting with sheep and moving onto vines. In 1702 they still had the 3 children with them but by 1709 (the next avail- able opgaaf), just one daughter remained living with them and by 1712 she had left home too. In 1719 the Council of Policy, in a list of unpaid debts, listed Lourens Campher van Werenhold, stating that he was still living, that he had a farm in 't Cleijgat, north of Clapmuts, and owed 156 gulden. (C. 51, pp. 53-65. 21 November 1719) I assume that their three children were Lourens, Antonetta and Jacoba Campher, although there is no documentary proof (that I have yet discovered). in 1705 Cornelis Campher appears for himself as a single man in Stellenbosch on the opgaaf returns and on the 5th September 1705 Antonetta married Gerrit van der Swaan in Stellenbosch, and on the 10th November 1711 Jacoba married Joost de Klerk, all three thus tying in well with the statistics of the children above. Cornelis, Antonetta and Jacoba all appear as baptismal witness for children of one or more of the others. Given that baptismal witnesses were, where possible, chosen from very near relations, such as grand parents and aunts and uncles, this is a furher argument for their being brothers and sisters.
