For the first twenty years of his life he was just Percival Boyd. he seems to have aquired the name "John" as an adult.

A speculative note added on 24 may 2009:
In the 1881 census there appears: Robert Boyd and his wife, Isabel and their son Percival, at BARNARDS CASTLE. Robert was born at Cleasby, about 1838. Isabel was born at Dalton about 1853. Percival was born at Cleasby about 1879.

I wondered how many isabels could have been born in Dalton around 1853, and found only one, Isabel MASON, daughter of William Mason and Elizabeth (whose maiden name I guess to be CLEMINSON). I also suspect than Isabel was Isabel Cleminson Mason.

Percival Boyd enlisted with the Yourkshire regiment in 1897, and said that hie next of kin were his father, Robert Boyd, and his sisters Lenora and Kate. So I searched for Lenora Boyd. I found Lenora Cleminson BOYD in Free BMD, Marriage Index, Jun 1904, Wharfedale, Yorkshire, Vol 9a, Page 330.

In the 1871 Census there is a Henry Cleminson, immediately followed by William and Elizabeth Mason, who had moved from Dalton to Bagby. This fuels my suspicion that William's wife was Elizabeth Cleminson, and that she came from the Bagby or Thirsk area.

I searched the census for "Elizabeth Cleminson", born about 1926, and I found one in the 1841 Census, at Startforth, right at BARNARDS CASTLE!

The 1841 Census suggests that Elizabeth had a twin brother, James.

It is likely that his parents were John Boyd, born 1755, x Esther (Hester), born 1756.
