12. | Gabriel Jan Smuts GREEFF was born on 5 Feb 1907 in Lichtenburg (son of Gabriel Johannes (Jan) GREEFF and Carolina Petronella (Totie) DE WET); died on 18 Aug 1976 in Kimberley. Notes:
Named after his father's good friend General Jan Christiaan Smuts (Later Field Marshal and also Prime Minister of SA) who agreed to be Godfather to his youngest son in 1906.
Started work at SA Railways on 1 Sept 1925. On 1 Feb. 1926, commenced electrical apprenticeship at Pretoria. From 1931 till 1936 worked in electrical Drawing office and on the electrification of the Natal railway line. Married, and with his wife, was sent to Holland, Germany and England for studies on electrical traction, and in 1938 achieved his degree at the Institution of Electrical Engineers, London and was accepted as a Chartered Engineer, M.I.E.E.. After outbreak of the war in 1939, returned to SA and became head of the Electrotechnical Drawing office, and also designed gunsights for cannons. Appointed as Electrical Engineer in Durban (1940), Cape Town (1941) and Kimberley (1943 till retirement in 1975) and Member of the SA Institute of Elect. Engineers. Developed great skill as cine photographer and bisley rifle champion. Elder in the DR Church, Kimberley.
Gabriel married Wilhelmina Alexandra (Minnie) VERWEY on 16 Feb 1935 in Melville, Johannesburg. Wilhelmina was born on 7 Sep 1905 in Witgatboom, Christiana, Transvaal, South Africa; died on 19 May 1995 in Strand, Cape, South Africa. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
