1. | Johannes GROENEWAL(D)(T), b2 was born in in Stellenbosch, Cape, South Africa; was christened on 16 Sep 1696 (son of Christoph GR, progenitor and Catharina NIEMAND); and died. Notes: In 1713 he joined the Drakenstein military cavalry as soldier and was an important member of the community. In his lifetime he farmed on a large scale and owned the following farms: Nazaret, Saxenburt, Spier, Idas Vallei and Veelverjaacht - allin the Stellenbosch district. He was also a man of untamed temper and killed one of his slaves. On 29.8.1739 in the case before the Court, he was stripped of all his public positions and was fined 200 Riksdalers as wel as the costs of the court. Furthermore, one of his slaves had to be sold and he was not again allowed to own any slaves. Johannes married Margaretha HATTINGH, b2 on 11 Apr 1717 in Cape, South Africa. Margaretha was born about 1700 in Cape, South Africa; was christened on 14 Nov 1700 in Stellenbosch, Cape, South Africa; died on 8 Apr 1779. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
2. | Christoph GR, progenitor was born about 1670 in Konigsbergen, East Prussia, Germany; died in 1721 in South Africa. Notes: Cristoph Grünwald arrived at the Cape by 1690 as Corporal in service of the H.O.I.K. from Kõningsbergin in East Prussia (now Kalingrad, Russia). In 1691 he became burger and blacksmith. The marriage couple lived on the farm "Hou den Mond" [Keep your mouth] outside Stellenbosch, which was allocated to Christoph in 1701. Between 1705-1708 they bought first one half and later the other half of "Groenhof" at the north-eastern side of Stellenbosch. With the christening of their children, his name was written in the christening register as Christoffel. Christoph married Catharina NIEMAND on 11 Nov 1691 in Cape Town, Cape, South Africa.
