    Notes:

    WHMA was born in Beaufort West. He farmed at Ystervarkspoort ( also spelt Yzervarkspoort ) near the present day hamlet of Loxton. He and his wife Anna lie buried on the farm which is today owned by Hentie Wiese. Anna was WHMA's first cousin. Anna's mother and WHMA's mother were sisters. I visited the graves in March 2000. Sadly, the small cemetery is in disrepair. Willem and Anna had 10 children and after her death in 1875 he married Magdalena Johanna Theron and they produced another 4 children. WHMA was 67 when his last child was born.
    Ystervarkspoort is the birthplace of many Kempens as the second, third and fourth generation farmed there. They then continued farming and moved to farms such as Beyersfontein on the fringe of the Victoria West district and Kromvlei in the Carnarvon district. In later years the family branched out to the towns of Prieska, Britstown, Hopetown, Warrenton and Pofadder.

    WILLEM boarded the Dutch East India Company ship HOORNWEGH under the command of Captain Simon Vaartjes. The HOORNWEGH, a ship of 880 metric tons, sailed for the Cape of Good Hope from the Island of Texel, Netherlands on 18th January 1790. He disembarked at the Cape on 29th April 1790. He was employed as a soldier by the Dutch East India Company until 27th December 1793. By 1798 he was teaching at J.H.Hattingh School at Graaff Reinet. On 19th March 1809 he married ANNA CATHARINA NEL in Graaff Reinet. They had 6 children. WILLEM died on 7th November 1838 at his farm Kafferskraal, Nieuweveld (Beaufort West district), South Africa at the age of 73 years, 5 months and 12 days.
    According to the book by South African Authors, J.A.Heese and R.T.J.Lombard, Suid Afrikaanse Geslagsregister, Vol 1-V1, Willem was teaching at the JH Hattingh School,Graaff-Reinet by 1798. It appears that he went farming at a later time and owned the farm Kafferskraal which lies in the Nieuweveld Mountains on the road between Loxton and Beaufort West. I have found a record of Willem and Anna and their family in the Opgaafrollen (tax returns) for the district of Beaufort in 1825.
    On his Death Notice it is stated that his fathers name was Gerhardus but that his mothers name was not known. It must be noted that there is a general acceptance that mothers names were not so important in this period of time. Their place of residence was not known either.
    It is interesting to note that Willem did not marry until he was 43 years of age. His first child was born twelve months prior to his marriage to Anna. Anna was 18 years of age when her first child was born. Then there is a 10 year interval before the next child is born. His last child was born when he was 67 years of age. The OPGAAFROLLEN (Tax and census returns) of 1810 and 1811 of the Graaff Reinet area shows Willem but Anna 's first names are not given. It also shows that they do not have a child. It is possible that the birth date for their first child is 1818 and not 1808 !! In 1810 and 1811 Willem and Anna had 160 sheep and one wagon.
    I found Wilhelmus Kemper ( with an R ) christened the same day, in the same town and with the same father as mentioned on the Death Notice of Willem. It has to be him. There is only one Catholic ( not Roman Catholic ) church in the small parish of Norf in the 1700's. I have a copy of the christening record of Wilhelmus and of his siblings as well as the Marriage record of his father Gerardus and Helena. I also have the marriage record of Gerardus' father and mother. Christoph Kemper and Catharina Schwartz and also the christening records of their children.

    DIE 'WILKERSE' VAN PRIESKA
    Waar ons vandaan kom uit die Prieska-kontrei het die bome langs die Grootrivier (Oranje) in die volksmond as wilkerbome (die rivierwilgers) bekend gestaan. Na analogie hiervan het ons familie daarlangs as die Wilkerse deurgegaan. Na my vader is verwys na Koot Wilkers van Krans-fontein, sy pa se plaas langs die Prieska-Griekwastadpad. Ek kom terug na hulle, maar eers wil ek hulle herkoms skets. Die stamvader was Heindrich Wilders wat in 1785 uit Lübeck, Duitsland, na Suid-Afrika uitgekom het om as kontrakteur-houtpagter in diens van die Hollands-Oos-Indiese-Kompagne te tree. Sy kontrak met die H.O.I.K. is nog in die Staatsargief in Kaapstad te sien. Dit het 16 Mei 1788 verstryk waarna hy Vryburger gewrord net.Eers net iets van sy land van herkoms. Die stad en provinsie Lübeck lê in Noord-Duitsland aan die Traverivier wat in die Lübeckbaai aan die Oossee vloei. Die stad is in 1143 A.D. deur Adolf II, hrtog van Holstein, gestig op die plek van die vroeere Wendiese nedersetting. Sedert 1282 was dit die 'hoofstad' van die Noord-Duitse Hanse-stede en het dit die handel en skeepvaart in die Oossee oorheers. Die bevolking was geheelenal Saksies en dit was teen die wet om in die Slawiese volke te ondertrou. Die stad Lübeck was een van die eerste demokrasieë op die vasteland van Europa. Gedurende 1368-1535 was dit 'n staat om mee rekening te hou. Gedurende die 15de en 16de eeue het dit egter agteruit gegaan deur botsings met Denemarke en die konkurrensie van die Hollanders. Sy mag is met die Dertigjarige Oorlog gebreek en is dit in 1810 by Frankryk ingelyf. In 1814 was dit egter weer 'n vry stad. Groot verwoesting was die stad se deel in Wêreldoorlog II. Die onsekere toekoms van sy geboorteland as gevolg van voortdurende aanvalle van Denemarke, Pole en Rusland sedert 1750, het Heindrich Wilders waarskynlik laat besluit om in 1785 na die Kaap de Goede Hoop te emigreer. Op watter ouderdom hy dit gedoen het, is nie bekend nie. Die van is dus suiwer Saksies. Hier aan die Kaap tree hy 20 April 1794 in die huwelik met Maria Jacoba Nortier. Hoewel hy lid van die Lutherse Kerk was, vind die huwelik in die Hollandse Kerk (die latere Groote Kerk) plaas maar hulle eerste vier kinders is in sy kerk gedoop en die laaste drie in die N.G. Kerk te Swellendam. A1 die kinders is in die distrik George gebore; drie seuns en vier dogters as volg:Elizabeth Magdalena x Petrus Johannes Killian; Johannes Bernardus x Emmerentia Maria Nel, Hendrik Christoffel x Susanna Elizabeth Nel; Salomon Petrus x Anna Katrina Fourie; Anna Catharina x Jakobus Erasmus; Hester Cecilia x Andries Maasberg; Johanna Maria x Jakobus Frederick Nel. Uit 'n dokument van die Court of Justice Rolle CJ 1163 (1803) blyk dit dat Heindrich Wilders die Wynpagterswette oortree het deur wederregtelik 'n anker wyn te vervoer. Die wyn is gekonfiskeer en hy moes 30 Gulde boete betaal. Op die doopsertifikate van hulle laaste drie kinders word gemeld dat die vader 'n leermeester van geen vaste adres was in die omgewing van Antonieberg, distrik Swellendam, tans geleë tussen Uniondale en Willowmore. Hy kon dus van die reisende skoolmeesters gewees het. Daar is ongelukkig geen spoor van 'n testament of doodsertifikaat van hom of sy eggenote nie. Hulle oudste seun, Johannes Bernardus, en sy vrou. het in die distrik Beaufort-Wes op die plaas Winkelhaak gewoon. Lesers word daaraan herinner dat die distrikte in die ou dae verwys na landdrosdistrikte wat baie uitgestrek was en die grense waarvan baie verander het namate bevolkingsaanwas nuweres regverdig het. Johannes is in 1843 op 45 jaar oorlede en sy vrou ses jaar tevore in 'n aanval van Kosas naby Uitenhage vanwaar sy oorspronklik was. Van hulle agt kinders was net die jongste 'n seun, ook Johannes Bernardus, wat die van sou kon voortdra. Die tweede seun van Heindrich, Hendrik Christoffel, wat met Susanna Elizabeth Nel getroud was, se geslag het doodgeloop want slegs twee dogters is uit die huwelik gebore. Die derde en jongste seun van Heindrich, Salomon Petrus, was my stamvader. Sy vrou was Anna Katrina Fourie. Oor haar was daar 'n misverstand as sou sv van Joodse afkoms wees en dat haar van iewers in die argiewe as Vorie gespel sou wees. Gaan jy egter op die stamboom terug, vind jy dat haar vader Markus Wynand Fourie en haar moeder Maria Adriana Kruger was, haar oupa Markus Antonius (ouma Catharina Bezuidenhout) met stamvader Louis Fourie wat as landbouer in 1688 uit Frankryk hier aangekom en met Anna Jourdan getrou het. Dit wil dus voorkom dat die 'Vorie-storie' nie waterdig was nie hoewel dit dikwels deur ons vrouens voor ons Willerse se kop gegooi is dat ons suinig sou wees a.g.v. Joodse bloed in ons are. Wat ons wel ten kwade toegreken kon gewees het, is dat baie van ons goeie besigheidsin aan die dag geld het. Die suiniges was mos die Skotte en tot dusver kon ek nie 'n Skotse voorvader opspoor nie. Aan moederskant uit die Maritze was daar wel 'n Jood, Abraham Hartog, wat as balju uit Kriegsfeld in 1734 hierheen met sy Joodse vrou geëmigreer het. Hulle seun, Paulus, is met Barbara Oberholzer getroud en 'n dogter van hulle is met Johannes Grobbelaar getroud. My ouma Maritz was nogal 'n nooi Grobbelaar! Salomon Petrus en sy gesin het ook in die distrik Beaufort-Wes gewoon. Daar is hulle oudste drie kinders gebore - tweelingdogters en 'n seun, Hendrik Markus. Teen ongeveer 1840 verhuis die gesin na die Onderzeekoerivier in die distrik Colesberg waar hulle volgende vier kinders gebore is: Petrus Salomon * 14.08.1841; Cornelia Adriana * 22.09.1843; Willem Adriaan * 10.06.1845; Johannes Bernardus * 18.02.1847. Hendrik Markus, wat stom was, het op geheimsinnige wyse verdwyn toe hy omtrent 12 jaar oud was. Hy is vermoedelik deur n leeu verskeur toe hy alleen by die vee in die veld was. Lang trekke met vee agter weiveld aan was algemeen en een so 'n trek word in herinnering geroep deur die Jongste broer, Johannes Bernardus, van Hopetown in 'n koerantonderhoud toe hy 100 jaar oud was in 1947. Die trek sou uit die Ouberggebied naby Graaff-Reinet na Griekwaland-Wes plaasgevind het. Hendrik het dus nie 'n nageslag gehad nie. Die tweede seun, Petrus Salomon *14.08.1841 x Judith Dorothea Nel, het in die distrik Willowmore gebly. Uit sewe kinders was die volgende drie seuns: Marthinus Jacobus * 23.06.1868; Hendrik Markus * 21.11.1878; Petrus Salomon * 16.05.1884. My oupa was Willem Adriaan * 10.06.1845 in die wyk Onderzeekoerivier, Colesberg. Sy pa, Salomon Petrus, het blykbaar al langs die Oranje, waarvan die Zeekoe 'n tak is, getrek tot in die distrik Hopetown. Daar is oupa met Susanna Maria Koorzen getroud. Hulle eerste kinders is in hierdie distrik gebore. Hulle het mettertyd verder af langs Grootrivier beweeg in die rigting van Prieska waar hulle oor die rivier aan Griekwaland-Wes se kant gaan woon het. Hy het 'n deel van 'ou erfpagplaas Blaauwbanksfontein op 12.12.1883 gekry, vandag bekend as Seekoeineus. Hoe toevallig dat hy uit Onderzeekoe' Colesberg kom. Op sy gedeelte het by toe die plaas Kransfontein aangelê. Die plaas is ongeveer 20 km van Prieska af op die Griekwastadpad. Hulle ses dogters was; Catharina Beatrix x Joseph Fourie; Anna Catharina x L. Swanepoel xx Pieter Maritz; Susanna Maria x C. Vlok; Maria Adriana x C. Visser; Johanna Catharina Gertruida x J. Visser; Elizabeth x S. Hyman. Daar was vier seuns: Petrus Salomon x M. Maritz; Barend Johannes x C. Theron. Willem Adriaan x A. Cloete; Jacobus Barend * 30.05.1885 x G. W. Maritz. My vader, Jacobus Barend, is met die jongste Maritz-dogter en my vader se oudste broer, Petrus Salomon, is met my moeder se oudste suster, Margarietha Wilhelmina Hendrieka, getroud. Die egpaar het altesaam 16 kinders gehad waarvan net 10 grootgeword het. Daar was twee tweelinge onder die kinders. Oupa is op betreklike jong leeftyd van 58 jaar in 1903 oorlede aan bloedvergiftiging aan die hand veroorsaak deur geroeste draad. Die wond was onsuksesvol deur 'n dokter op Prieska behandel en oupa besluit toe om met die perdekar na 'n ander dokter op Griekwastad te ry. Op Niekerkshoop gekom het hy die einde voel nader en maar na sy plaas Kransfontein teruggekeer waar hy oorlede en begrawe is. Ouma Willers, Susanna Maria Koorzen, stam af van Johannes Marthinus wat in 1741 na Suid-Afrika gekom het. In 1779 het hy en Engela Jansen 'n seun, Barend Johannes, wat met Johanna Joon trou en 'n seun, Marthinus Johannes, het. Hy trou met Johanna Botes en 'n seun, Barend Johannes * 31.03.1831, trou met 'n lerse weesmeisie, Cathrine Beatrix Zones, een van 'n groep wat ingevoer is as vrouens vir mans hier. Van haar voorgeslag weet ons niks. So was my ouma-grootjie van vaderskant 'n lerse! Kan jy nou meer! My vader en my name, Jacobus Barend, is dus Koorzenname. Hier moet ek eers iets interessants oor die Koorzen-van vertel. Die stamvader was Jan (Johann) Maartin Coertze wat in 1731 as soldaat uit Noorweë hierheen gekom het. Die van Koor(t)zen het ontstaan uit Coertze en die voorname Johann Martin en Johannes Marthinus kom dikwels voor by die Koorzens en Koortse. Claas Coertze van Mecklenburg se van is ook vermoedelik verander tot Coort, Koorts of Koortzen. Ouma Willers is 'n tweede keer getroud met Hendrik Greeff. Sy self is op Prieska op 11.11.1930 oorlede in die ouderdom van 78 jaar. Oupa Willers se jongste broer was Johannes Bernardus * 18.02.1847 ook in die Onderzeekoewyk, Colesberg (oorlede 102 jaar later in 1949 op Hopetown). Hy is in 1870 getroud met Hester Jacobs by wie hy vier kinders gehad het: Petrus Salomon; Martha; Jan Bernardus (* 08.02.1875 † 18.03.1978, 103 jaar oud geword en lank op Griekwastad gewoon); Johannes Bernardus, klein oorlede. By sy tweede vrou, Johanna van Wyk, met wie hy in 1881 in die huwelik tree, het hy nog vier dogters en drie seuns. Een van die seuns was Cornelius Johannes * 12.10.1893, vroeër van Douglas, wat met Magdalena Duvenhage getroud was en twee seuns gehad het, Dr. Jan, 'n ekonoom voorheen in diens van die Reserwebank, en Jan Bernardus. Nader aan my eie wil ek net kortliks skets: my vader was Jacobus Barend * 30.05.1885, my moeder Gertruida Wilhelmina Maritz * 03.12.1891. Ons was 'n gesin van agt kinders: Willem Adriaan * 19.03.1910, tree af as brigadier in S.A. Polisie; Pieter Cornelius Johannes * 19.04.1911, vroeër diamantspeurder S.A.P. en tree af as sekuriteitsman by De Beers; Johanna Barbara Maria * 12.06.1912, eers onderwyseres, later huisvrou; Jacobus Barend * 01.11.1913, onderwyser, beplanner, skakelbeampte by Yskor; Jan Gysbert * 25.05.1918, S.A. Lugmag, tree af as brigadier; Petrus Salomon * 11.05.1922, chirurg, Kaapstad; Hendrik * 31.03.1927, tandarts; Susanna Maria * 31.03.1927, huisvrou.
