Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Pieter (Den Deen) ERASMUS was born about 1667 in Denmark; died in 1731 in Drakenstein, Cape, South Africa(Paarl).

    Notes:

Pieter was the progenitor (stamvader) of the Erasmus family in South Africa. He arrived in the Cape in 1693. In some Cape records he appears as "Pieter den Deen", thereby implying that his origins were in Denmark. The surname Erasmus is a latinized version of the patronymic Rasmussen, a common name in both Denmark and Norway.
He farmed on the farm "Groenkloof" in Wagenmakersvallei (Wellington), which fell in the sub-district of Drakenstein. He received this farm 28 Feb 1699, but since he was not in favour of governor Van der Stel he only obtained his title in 1714. He had this farm until his death. His farm was next to Baren Blom's. It could also be that the name of his farm was "De Groenenbergh", next to the Krommerivier in the Wagenmakersvalleij (this farm is known today as "Onverwacht" in Bovlei). This farm remained in his possession until his death in 1731.

Erasmus Pieter - 25 jaar oud
    Ester - 20 jaar oud
    Lourens - 19 jaar oud
    Catharina - 18 jaar oud
    Laris - 17 jaar oud
    Jacob - 16 jaar oud

    Notes:

From Nantes. Arrived 1695. Served as deacon in Drakenstein congregation and was appointed heemraad for Stellenbosch and Drakenstein in 1715. It is not clear whether Nantes refers to his place of origin or the farm in Paarl where he farmed. He bought the farm Nantes in 1709.

Du Plooy.paf: He came from Nantes in Brittany and settled on the farm "Nantes" near Paarl, arriving in 1695 . He was deacon in the Drakenstein church congregation and was appointed councillor for Stellenbosch and Drakenstein in 1715. The family name LORET died out in South Africa in the next generation.

From Nantes, France. He arrived in 1695 and worked from 1697 as assistant to the Jouberts. Later farmed on the farm Nantes in the Paarl.

Groete Alta

There were rumours that Isabeau Richard and her future son-in-law Guillaume Loret of Nantes committed adultery. The minister Henricus Beck implemented church discipline as a result in 1707.

    Janet,
