  1. 1.  Lourens Pietersz ERASMUS, b3 was christened on 22 Jun 1704 in Drakenstein, Cape, South Africa(Paarl) (son of Pieter (Den Deen) ERASMUS and Maria Elizabeth JOOSTEN); died in btw 22 Oct - 27 Nov 1760 in Beerenfontein ?.

    Notes:

Lourens was a burger van Drakenstein. He was a corporal in the dragonders (1730-1740).
Later he became a farmer. He farmed near Ceres in the Cape where he produced vegetables, fruit, mutton, wool, grain, wine, brandy and nuts.
He farmed on his mother-in-law's (Louisa Cordier) farm "Wildebeestkuil" or "Geelblomsvlei" (today in the Suider Paarl area), as well as his own loan farms "Uitkomst" (in the present day Ceres district near Karoopoort in the Agter Bokkeveld) and "Beerenfontein" (in the Roggeveld above Kamsberg, the present day district of Sutherland south of town); both these towns were then part of the Drakenstein district.
According to SA Genealogies he also had a voorkind with Catharina Hoffman, presumably a slave.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Pieter (Den Deen) ERASMUS was born about 1667 in Denmark; died in 1731 in Drakenstein, Cape, South Africa(Paarl).

    Notes:

Pieter was the progenitor (stamvader) of the Erasmus family in South Africa. He arrived in the Cape in 1693. In some Cape records he appears as "Pieter den Deen", thereby implying that his origins were in Denmark. The surname Erasmus is a latinized version of the patronymic Rasmussen, a common name in both Denmark and Norway.
He farmed on the farm "Groenkloof" in Wagenmakersvallei (Wellington), which fell in the sub-district of Drakenstein. He received this farm 28 Feb 1699, but since he was not in favour of governor Van der Stel he only obtained his title in 1714. He had this farm until his death. His farm was next to Baren Blom's. It could also be that the name of his farm was "De Groenenbergh", next to the Krommerivier in the Wagenmakersvalleij (this farm is known today as "Onverwacht" in Bovlei). This farm remained in his possession until his death in 1731.

Erasmus Pieter - 25 jaar oud
    Ester - 20 jaar oud
    Lourens - 19 jaar oud
    Catharina - 18 jaar oud
    Laris - 17 jaar oud
    Jacob - 16 jaar oud
