2. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Received his schooling at Aliwal North High School. At a early age, he received the farm Mooifontein where he lived for 44 years until he retired to Aliwal North. Was a faithful supporter of Minister Jacobus Wilhelmus Sauer in his long association with Aliwal North. Was elected to the Divisional Council in 1876 and it was through his efforts that the Sauer Bridge over the Kraai River was built. In 1896 he was elected to the Higher Chamber of the old Cape Parliament and was the first representative with an Afrikaans surname. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Cape in 1908 in which he served until Union in 1910. Thereafter he withdrew from active politics but stayed a staunch supporter of the S.A. Party of Generals Botha and Smuts. Nicolaas married Aletta Petronella WAGENAAR on 3 Jun 1871 in Aliwal North, Cape, South Africa. Aletta (daughter of Johannes Petrus WAGENAAR and Catharina Christina Wilhelmina OELOFSE) was born on 14 Mar 1851 in Aliwal North, Cape, South Africa; died on 7 Nov 1899 in Mooifontein, Cape, South Africa.
