    Jacobus was 'n burger van die Swellendam distrik. Die Potgieters was altyd aan die voorpunt van die uitbreiding van die beskawings-lyne. Harmen Jansz was een van die eerste inwoners aan die Eersterivier, lank voor die dorp Stellenbosch daar gestig is. Vyf generasies later sou Andries Hendrik die stigter van vele republieke word. Andries se Oupa, Jacobus was egter ook reeds meer as vyftig jaar voor hom besig om die grenslyne te verskuif. Op 1 Mei 1775 het PA Myburg 'n verslag op las van die companje opgestel oor die oos-grense van die Kaap kolonie. In sy verslag meld hy dat Louis Nel, Jacobus Potgieter, Frans Labuschagne, Willem Prinsloo, sen. Hendrik Kriegler, Claas Prinsloo, jun. Johannes (Hannes) Kloppers, Hendrik Kloppers en Johannes (Jan) Nortje, sen. wat tot die Swellendam behoort alreeds saam met hul families en vee aan die oorkant van De Bruins Hoogte (Bruintjieshoogte) gevestig het om goeie plase te vind wat weiding en water aan hul vee sou verskaf. Bruintjieshoogte is 'n bergreeks tussen Somerset East en Cradock. Later sou hierdie omgewing die Cradock distrik word (Moodey III,b48). Nadat die companje vestiging buite die grense verbied het het die burgers (en ook A Kruger, Dirk Schalkwyk, Pieter Wllimsz Nel, Willem Prinsloo Jnr. en Hendrik Prinsloo) op 10 November 1774 hulle redes gegee hoekom hulle oorkant die grense moes vestig en toestemming gevra om daar te bly. Die burgers was almal arm en kon die plundery van hul vee deur die Hottentotte nie meer bekostig nie. (Moody III,b39) Ander burgers wat ook daar gevestig was in 1775 was Christoffel Botha, Helgaart Muller, Theunis Botha Cz, Cornelis Bezuidenhout Wz, Jan Oosthuizen sen, Jan Oosthuize jun. (van Sneeuberg). Die burgers wat aan die Sondagsrivier gevestig het was Willem Botha Fz, Frederik Botha sen., en Jan Du Plessis (van Swellendam). Coert Grobbelaar van Swellendam het aan die suidekant van De Bruins Hoogte gevestig (Moody III,b48). Baie van die burgers het in armoede daar gewoon en party het saam gewoon op 'n plaas. Op 1 April 1777 het kommandant Opperman verslag gegee dat die burgers, onder bevel van sersant A H Kruger sou weier om diens in die kommando te doen (Moody III,b66). Sommige van die ander persone wat vermeld word was familie van Jacobus; Louis Nel was getroud met Jacobus se oudste dogter Isabella en Frans Labuschagne was getroud met sy tweede dogter Cornelia. Hendrik Klopper se dogter, Geertruida sou later trou met Jacobus se seun Hermanus, die kommandant generaal se vader.
